Turning to the future, there is a clear need for environmental engineers who are able to collaborate across disciplines and communicate broadly to the scientific community, policymakers, and the public. Realizing sus- tainability presents many opportunities for environmental engineers to evolve from those who characterize, manage, and remediate existing environmental problems to those who are designing and developing new technologies and fostering informed decisions and actions that address sustainability challenges of supplying food, water, and energy; curbing climate change and adapting to its impact, designing a future without pollution and waste, and creating sustainable systems, particu- larly urban and industrial systems.
