This text is designed to provide students with a thor- ough understanding of the most common procedures and techniques of the current CLIA-waived tests and of cardiopulmonary diagnostic tests as they apply to the ambulatory care setting. The first two chapters provide an introduction to the clinical laboratory and the government regulations for setting up a CLIA- waived laboratory. The remaining chapters, 3 through 10, present a consistent "triad" organization by first focusing on the fundamental concepts related to the procedures presented in each chapter, followed by the application of the procedures, and then concluding with advanced concepts to stimulate critical thinking. Procedure boxes are integrated throughout with step- by-step instructions that are reinforced with numerous full-color photographs or illustrations. Throughout the text there is also a strong emphasis placed on proper patient interactions, specimen collections, safety, and government compliance. Written exams are provided to measure cognitive (conceptual) competency. Mea- surable outcome-based procedure sheets and evalua- tion forms are provided in the workbook to measure psychomotor and affective (behavioral) competencies. When writing the workbook and instructor materi- als, our intention was to provide instructors and health care practitioners with many customizable tools that will help them produce well-trained, qualified allied health professionals who are able to effectively work in the CLIA-waived laboratory setting, and in ambulatory settings where cardiopulmonary tests are performed
