Summary :Before reading this book, it is important to recognise that this text is primarily a pathophysiology text: while we may recap on anatomy and physiology in places, this text is not a substitute for learning anatomy and physiology thoroughly before attempting to understand pathophysiology. We therefore strongly recommend that you are fresh and up to date with anatomy and physiology before delving into the complexities of pathophysiology. This book is structured to follow on from Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology for Nursing Practice (Boore et al., 2016) and our recommendation is to use the Revise sections in that book to check your anatomy and physiology knowledge and understanding. We will refer you to key chapters and sections in Boore et al. (2016) throughout this text.
In recognising that this is a pathophysiology text, we do make links to practice to assist you in apply- ing the content you are learning. However, this text is not a treatment/intervention text; the knowledge you will learn in this book will help you to understand the physiological principles upon which interven- tions are based and will enable you to understand your practice and what is occurring with the people in your care. A thorough understanding of pathophysiology is central to being able to think critically and analyse signs and symptoms.
