Based on research conducted by the Association of Indonesian Internet Service Providers (APJII) around 196.71 million Indonesians (73.7%) have been connected to the user internet network throughout 2019-2020. It can be seen that most Indonesians tend to use the internet in all things, especially in communicating and seeking information. Social media is a place that is often used by the public, especially young people, to interact with each other. Every day, most Indonesians access social media to find the entertainment and information they need and even use social media as a source of income.

However, in using social media, it is necessary to pay attention to several things that are in accordance with Islamic teachings. Islam as a religion that guides its people to always prioritize doing good in every side of life, including having limits for its people in using social media wisely and still paying attention to ethics and morals.

Ethics in using social media according to Islamic teachings include:

  1. Looking for useful information. In using social media, we should use it wisely and positively, one of which is by using social media as a means to seek useful information and knowledge. Rasulullah SAW said: "Whoever takes a path (way) to gain knowledge, then Allah will surely make easy for him the path to heaven." (HR. Muslim).

  2. Tabayyun. As a Muslim we must be tabayyun first in receiving information or news. This needs to be done to minimize misinformation or news that cannot be accounted for. As in the word of Allah in Surah Al-Hujurat verse 6: "O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful." (Surat al-Hujurat [49]:6)

  3. Don't spread hate and fake news. Hate speech and spreading fake news are included in despicable morals (morals of madzmumah) which are contrary to Islamic teachings. Allah SWT says: "Indeed, those who fabricate lies are only those who do not believe in Allah's verses, and they are the liars." (Surah al-Nahl: 105).

  4. Maintain verbal and words in speech. As Muslims, we must maintain our speech in every activity, including social media. Do not let our words in cyberspace hurt or say bad words that are not in accordance with Islamic teachings. Rasulullah SAW also said: "Should be more silent, because silence can get rid of the devil and help you with your religious affairs." (H.R. Ahmad).

  5. Use social media as a means of spreading kindness. Da'wah activities are basic in Islam to encourage and invite others to become human beings who have character and knowledge. Da'wah can be delivered in various ways and through various media, one of which is through social media. Therefore, we should use social media as a means to preach by sharing positive content and spreading kindness. As the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: "Whoever points to goodness, he will get a reward like the reward of those who do it" (HR. Muslim)
