Prof. Dr. H. Ahmad Syafii Maarif or who is often called Buya Syafii was summoned by Sang Khaliq on 27 May 2022. The former chairman of PP Muhammadiyah for the 1998-2005 period left scars for the Indonesian people, considering his extraordinary contribution to the nation.
As a scholar, Buya Syafii has unquestionable works. He has published many works in various mass media, journals, and books. According to Buya Syafii Maarif, reading, thinking, researching, and writing are very important activities, and should be practiced throughout life. An educational certificate is like a driving license which means nothing without the support of the four scientific activities above.
Buya Syafii Maarif also advised that reading should not only be quantitative, but also qualitative. “Read a lot,” said Buya Syafii Maarif, “then develop our own writing style.” This message is very important. The serious problem of a writer is lazy to read. In fact, the writings of writers who don't read are usually dry and don't share knowledge, except just playing with words without meaning.
Reading activities for some people sound less familiar. Considering the reading index in Indonesia has not improved too much. Although we have been spoiled by technology that develops every day, in reality the reading culture still needs to be improved. For him, reading is the main foundation for having broad insight. We can learn about European history without having to come there. We can know how extraordinary the education system in Finland is by reading.
According to Buya, people who do not want to improve themselves by reading and learning from their surroundings are like people who enhance their own distant place. So Buya diligently tries to spread the spirit of literacy to young people, because he doesn't want to see young people in his country fall into the abyss of humiliation, Buya's charming diction to describe this kind of situation is not to fall into the abyss of civilization.
We as future generations who will lead Indonesia in the future need to ask ourselves. Have I read? Have I read anything new? Have I found out what I didn't know? These sentences can be a tool for our introspection so that we are not trapped in the cave of ignorance. Thank you Buya Syafii for being an inspiration to the Indonesian people.
