The fundamental feature of Muhammadiyah as an Islamic purification movement is its very strong dependence on the Qur'an and Sunnah. In the Manhaj Tarjih Muhammadiyah, it is stated that the main sources of Islamic teachings are the Koran and the Sunnah. Secretary of the Division of Qur'an and Hadith Studies of the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership Council (PP), H. Aly Aulia, Lc. M. Hum. explained three reasons why Muhammadiyah did not have a school of thought in accordance with the fatwa of the Tarjih Council in the Book of Religious Questions and Answers.
He explained that the first reason Muhammadiyah was not fanatical about one school was that the religion of Islam understood by Muhammadiyah was a religion that was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, which was based on the Qur'an and As-Sunnah. In accordance with the words of the Messenger of Allah: "It is narrated from Anas bin Malik that the Messenger of Allah said: I have left you all two things, you will not go astray as long as you stick to both the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger". (Narrated by Malik in the book Muwattha'). However, the Director of the Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta Madrasah Mu'allimin emphasized that, although he is not a fan of any of the schools, Muhammadiyah does not completely reject the opinions of existing madhabs in accordance with the criteria set.
The second reason is related to tajdid insight. For Muhammadiyah, there are religious teachings that are still open and closed. The closed teachings include aspects of aqidah, morals, and worship. While the religious teachings that are still open are muamalah muamalah.
The third reason is insight into openness and tolerance for differences. In this case, Muhammadiyah is open to criticism, and tolerant in relation to other religious views. This insight makes the fatwas issued by the Tarjih Council not claimed to be the most correct and blame others.
“Muhammadiyah is not tied to any one particular school of thought, but the school was then used as a reference. The opinions of these schools can be taken into consideration in determining the law," said Aly Aulia, Lc. M. Hum on (22/6) at the KH. Ahmad Dahlan, UMY.
