In the world of education, especially higher education institutions have a great responsibility to provide education about preventing plagiarism so that the entire academic community (students, lecturers and educational staff) can produce quality written works and avoid plagiarism elements. Based on the Minister of National Education Regulation Number 17 of 2010 concerning the Prevention and Handling of Plagiarism in Higher Education, it is explained that:
"Plagiarism is an act intentionally or unintentionally in obtaining or trying to obtain credit or value for a scientific work by quoting part or all of the work and/or scientific work of another party which is recognized as a scientific work, without stating the source appropriately and adequately."
This act of plagiarism must be avoided because this action is a criminal offense and has an impact or sanction on the person who did it. Based on Law no. 20 of 2003 regulates sanctions for people who commit plagiarism, especially in the academic environment. The sanctions are as follows (Article 70):
"Graduates whose scientific work used to obtain academic, professional, or vocational degrees as referred to in Article 25 Paragraph (2) are proven to be plagiarists shall be sentenced to a maximum imprisonment of two years and/or a maximum fine of Rp. 200,000,000.00 ( two hundred million rupiah)."
Many factors can encourage someone to do plagiarism, such as limited time in completing assignments, low interest in reading, not knowing how to avoid plagiarism, lack of references, etc.
The scope of the plagiarism context
Plagiarism is an act that violates copyright. To make it easier to understand plagiarism, first understand the scope of plagiarism. The following is the form or scope of the act of plagiarism:
Citing words, sentences, data, and information from other sources without revealing the identity of the source
Using ideas, ideas, or theories from others without revealing the identity of the source
Paraphrasing or changing other people's sentences or opinions without telling the source
Using facts (data or information) belonging to others without mentioning the identity of the source
Recognize scientific work that has been created or published by others as scientific work without informing the source
Submit a scientific work produced and/or published by another party as if it were one's own work
Plagiarism Type
According to Soelistyo (2011) there are several types of plagiarism"
Word for Word Plagiarism: writing every word of another author without revealing the source.
Plagiarism of the source (Plagiarism of Source): writing based on the ideas or opinions of others without telling the source.
Plagiarism of Authorship (Plagiarism of Authorship): admitting as the author of someone else's work.
Self Plagiarism: the author recycles his own writing without making significant changes or the author publishes one article in more than one editorial publication.
How to Avoid Plagiarism
There are several ways to avoid plagiarism, including:
Quote (Quotation) The author quotes when taking words or sentences from books, articles, or other written works. The quote must use the exact words of the source. If the quotation is relatively short (less than 3 lines or 40 words), the words must be enclosed in quotation marks. After that, the author includes a bibliography of the work referred to properly and correctly.
Re-Discussing (Paraphrase) Paraphrasing is expressing other people's ideas / ideas using their own words, without changing the intent or meaning of ideas / ideas while still mentioning the source.
Summarize (Summary) Summarizing can prevent us from committing plagiarism.
Using Antiplagiarism Apps In addition to the three ways above, to avoid plagiarism the author can use several antiplagiarism supporting applications, such as Turnitin, Duplichecker, Plagiarism Checker, etc. Authors can also use references manager applications (Mendeley, Zotero, Endnote, etc.) for citation management and bibliography.
